I e-mailed Matier & Ross of the Chronicle about this issue a few
months ago and got a return call from Phil Matier. I explained that
it had been at least six months since I had seen a cop on a Muni
vehicle, whereas I had seen them do ride-alongs every once in a while
when the program was new. I told him that my understanding was that
cops were required to report regarding their Muni ride-alongs, so he
was going to check to see what records were available in order to
determine if this program had effectively terminated or not. Then I
never heard anything more, nor did I see any items in the Matier &
Ross column.
I still don't see cops riding Muni vehicles (at least not on the 38
Geary or 1 California, which I mostly ride). However, I did hear one
story from a Muni Metro driver recently where he told me there was a
cop who would step aboard his N Judah train at the turn-around at
Ocean Beach and have the driver sign his card (thereby verifying that
the cop had ridden the train that day) and then leave WITHOUT EVER
REALLY RIDING THE TRAIN AT ALL. I wonder how often this sort of shell
game is played out each day city-wide.
