>>I still don't see cops riding Muni vehicles (at least not on the 38
Geary or 1 California, which I mostly ride). However, I did hear one
story from a Muni Metro driver recently where he told me there was a
cop who would step aboard his N Judah train at the turn-around at
Ocean Beach and have the driver sign his card (thereby verifying that
the cop had ridden the train that day) and then leave WITHOUT EVER
REALLY RIDING THE TRAIN AT ALL. I wonder how often this sort of shell
game is played out each day city-wide.<<
I used to catch the 14 Mission a few months ago between the hours of
4:00 AM and 5:00 AM. Some mornings a police car would flag down the
bus, usually in the Excelsior or Bernal Heights areas, and a policeman
would ride while his partner drove to another stop a few blocks ahead.
He would chat with the driver, apparently getting some sort of
confirmation that he had been there and then dismount when the bus
caught up with his partner. At no time did I ever see the policeman
even check out the riders, although at that hour usually all one
encounters is an occasional derelict. So I guess the police DO ride
MUNI.
