The MTC Bay Bridge Task Force -- the same people who recommended that
Willie Brown's transit-hostile Transbay Terminal tear-down and real
estate scam be funded out of public taxes and public bridge tolls --
are meeting again THIS WEDNESDAY. Meetings for the last three months
have been cancelled, and the more paranoid amongst us wonder whether
this might be to diffuse the political momentum and huge public
hearing turn-outs we've been generating.
Please note that the task force has NOT retracted or modified their
resolution, and that we're not safe until they do.
Please note also the Caltrans STILL plans to demolish the west loop of
the Transbay Terminal approaches: a plan completely in keeping with
Willie Brown's plans and completely at odds with efficient and growing
use of the terminal. Such a demolition would not only cause
increased congestion and reduced flexibility and reduced capacity in
terminal operations, it would also hugely increase cash-strapped (and
rider-friendly) AC Transit's costs by removing bus storage facilities.
Bike/pedestrian access to the bridge is still in no way assured.
So, for all those reasons and more, let the Task Force members know
that the issues are still important as important as ever, that they
have not been satisfactorily resolved, and that you will be holding
them accountable.
It would be great to have as many people who can make it.
Public agencies rely on the public not being able to attend middle of
working day meetings to disrupt the rubber-stamping of staff
recommendations and backroom deals; please continue to prevent this
from happening with the Bay Bridge.
If you can't come, write and "let them know you care."
Thanks for all your help. Sorry not to get this out sooner,
Richard.
