... as part of an expanded bike policy that includes infrastructure
improvements and institutional respect for bicycling. Otherwise the
good practices that get preached won't stick, because people will
think, "this is a poll tax," instead of "this is good sense."

>I long ago ( I am 68) gave up bicycling becaue it is just too dangerous.

It doesn't have to be. It would be greatly improved if Muni and other
transit service were better, and the city took its policy focus away
from cars. It's the number of cars in the city and the designs deemed
necessary to accommodate those cars that make the streets dangerous.

I think we'll reach a point very soon in San Francisco that a limit
is placed on the number of cars that can be registered or operated
here, or some restrictions are placed. Otherwise we'll choke to death.

Yeah and I think just like the change you noticed toward blue denim,
it's going to be hard to convince people to always have light-colored
or reflective outerwear available when they're walking somewhere.

I think probably an aggressive campaign could get bikers wearing
brighter clothes, and the message might stick if it was done by
someone who didn't think bicycling was childish (or utopian or a sign
of poverty -- hmm, maybe that's the same as "childish").
