Sorry about the delay...took a couple days of much needed R&R (drove
around the Sierras, visited favorite hot springs, snow shoed.

>Potrero Center

As a contrast the remodelled Safeway at Market/Church is reasonably
pedestrian friendly. Private pedestrian ROWs from Church,
Market/Dolores and Market/Church.

>Private Lanes
>>Part of the problem here is that so many of the streets in S.F. have only one traffic lane in each direction. What streets are wide enough to allow dedicated bus lanes?

Market, Van Ness, Geary ST. (relegate cars to O'Farrell and Post),
Mission Downtown(bus bulbs or islands), 3rd/4th Sts, Kearney,
Stockton...for starters

>Donald's rule: it isn't really a dedicated lane unless it has a raised
bed

I think a lot could be done with striping, and judicious use of dots,
and good signage...with the backup of real enforcement and the sting of
a $250 fine.

>Quality of Life

a lot of behavioral stuff has to do with enforcement...One rule on the
14-Mission, is that if you want a problem SOLVED, try to get to Top of
the Hill, and flag down or call for Daly City PD. One reason other
cities have better behavior on the buses (regardless of clientele) is
that police response is often swift and effective (as opposed to merely
moving the problem passenger from bus to sidewalk)

>Attracting NPWC (non-poor working class)

All you have to do is provide a reliable (seat or sometimes stand) to
and from work that is fairly safe. Of course that requires a whole
bunch of other stuff that has and is being discussed here.

>Siemens-Duewag cars
did not have the excess of bells and whistles that Muni was looking
for. For that matter, the Breda's might well be a decent car if they
were stripped down.

>Upholstered Seats
Follow the money...one kid who maybe pays $0.35 with a $1 knife can do
hundreds of dollars of damage in a few minutes...keep the fiberglass
seats. Worry about the glass etchers doing in numerous $2700 breda
windshields.

>Preaching to the choir...
no need to froth, Richard Mlynarik
