Thanks, Tom, for the kind words regarding my letter.
These figures came from Dan Murphy. However, most randomly selected
groups of people that I know of support the general ratio. For example,
there are five people in our upper middle class household. One
exlusively drives. Two of us exclusively use public transit. Two do
both.
Also, I don't buy the "rule of thumb". Everyone I know who rides MUNI
almost always takes one route in two directions -- that is, two
boardings per person per day, not the assumed three.
