Several recent posts have questioned or outright denied the value of the
3rd st line. In turn, others have rightly described it as a highly
political gift to the Bayview neighborhood. Notwithstanding some qualms
I have about design specifics, I support building the line. As
experience in both Sacremernto, and Dallas has shown, new LRV systems
can outstrip ridership projection. Portland as well has been far more
sucessful than the original figures predicted. In the current RailNews
article on the Dallas system the "rail effect" was cited, and I think
this will be the key to the 3rd st line. IF MUNI is fixed by the time
the line opens, 3rd st has a potential. Several things are key here.
Security for the riders MUST be abundant from day one--and should be ob
the current system as well. (No excuses) The cars must be kept clean
and despite the current plans the median railways should be curbed
off. Frankly, given the current housing crunch this is a likely area
for gentrification/yuppie infill. Whether this is pc or bot it is the
likely future and a functional LRV linking at both ends to an improved
CalTrain will make the area transit functional.
