Hi, gang!

This message is being passed out to all F-Line riders this week. There is
a very real threat that the five runs added as a result of last year's
Meltdown may be eliminated with the April 3 barn signup. I feel Rescue
Muni needs to be aware of this, and do everything it can to prevent this
from happening.

Thanks,

F-MARKET

RIDER ALERT!

On April 5, Muni intends to cut the FIVE EXTRA F-LINE RUNS added in
September 1998 to ease overcrowding!

"METRO IS RUNNING GREAT NOW!"

That's what top Muni management is saying--and would like you to
be-lieve--as their justification that the five extra F-Line runs, put on
during the Great Muni Metro Meltdown, are no longer needed.
The truth speaks otherwise. The facts: Overcrowded single-car
Metro trains, especially on routes serving the Castro, continue to be the
rule, not the exception, today. Every morning, the subway's "experiencing
heavy traffic" (read: glacial crawl of inbound trains) from Van Ness to
Embarcadero. The intermina-ble delays caused by breakdowns of both the old
Boeing and the new Breda LRVs, taking place at any hour and with madden-ing
unpredictability. And standing loads on nearly every rush-hour F-Market
street-car, even with the extra service and more frequent headways, as
hundreds of riders desert Muni Metro for the colorful F-Market trolleys'
cushioned seats and reliable service given by their faithful operators.
Now top management wants to return F-Line service to what it was
before the Meltdown. In other words, back to every 8-10 minutes in the
morning, every 8-9 minutes in the evening (instead of 4-6 minutes apart).
And a return to the 15-minute midday service. And overcrowded cars. In
our view, cutting back service is irresponsible and unacceptable!
Ironically, Muni plans to re-increase F-Line service in September,
just before startup of service to Fisherman's Wharf. If that is their
intention, why are they backtracking now? This makes no sense!
Your operators and line supervisors have worked hard to get more
service for you. We need your help! YOU can help keep the extra F-Market
streetcar service going. Call, write or e-mail Mayor Willie Brown's office
today!
