We CAN slow traffic down in SF through basic traffic calming measures.
Street design methods like corner bulb outs, bus stop bulbs, street trees
and bike lanes all slow traffic down while improving transit, walking, and
biking conditions. By making the street appear narrower, they send the
psychological message to drivers to slow down and to pay more attention to
where they are going. Speeding occurs on wide open streets like those in
SOMA because they feel more like highways than shared city streets.

The city is currently developing a traffic calming program that will
install measures like these on both neighborhood streets and arterials and
commercial streets. Muni can benefit especially through bus bulbs which 1)
make the street appear narrower, 2) provide more space for
pedestrians/passengers, and 3) maintain transit priority by obviating the
need to pull into the curb and then back into traffic.
