Cecile Andrew, Author: Simplicity: The Back door to Environmentalism
As people's lives grow increasingly frantic, the age old concept of
simplicity is once again emerging
and capturing people's attention=2E People are drawn to Simplicity for =
a
variety of reasons: many are
worried about debt; many are worried about stress and their health; som=
e
are worried about the decline
in community and civic life; all are looking for cures to our time fami=
ne=2E
When people begin to address
these issues, they discover that they're all related to the destruction=
of
the environment=2E Our
consumerist life style of work and spend is not only draining people's
pocketbook and robbing them of
time and health, it is destroying the Earth=2E People discover that eac=
h
thing they buy consumes a piece
of the planet=2E They discover that every aspect of commerce, productio=
n,
shipping, advertisement, driving
their SUVs to the mall? uses oil=2E They begin to understand the cause =
and
severity of global warming and
climate disruption=2E
The simplicity movement can attract a whole new audience to the
environmental movement=2E And it is
organizing people for involvement=2E Here in the Bay area we have a str=
ong
network of forums and study
circles that are bringing people together to learn about simplicity and=
the
environment=2E The presenter is Cecile
Andrews, author of the Circle of Simplicity (HarperCollins 97)=2E She i=
s the
director of The Simplicity Circles
Project with the non-profit Seeds of Simplicity=2E Formerly a community=
college administrator and a visiting
scholar at Stanford, Cecile directs the Bay Area Simplicity Forums Proj=
