Last week Greenaction sent you an email that included information
about a community fight against plans by Shell Oil to double their
pumping capacity at a gas station next to homes and schools. The
Shell facility is located in San Francisco's Excelsior District, a
working class community populated primarily by many non-English
Speaking Latino and Asian families. In an act of environmental
injustice and racism, the Bay Area Air Quality Management District
approved the permit without even holding a promised public meeting
with the community - and despite acknowledging an increased cancer
risk due to significant benzene emissions.
The Chinese Progressive Association, PODER, Coleman Advocates for
Youth, and Greenaction joined with local residents, parents, teachers
and students in fighting the Shell expansion.
TODAY WE ARE PLEASED TO REPORT GREAT NEWS!! VICTORY!!
Shell's representative has just sent a letter to the Bay Area Air
Quality Management District. The letter says in part:
"On behalf of Shell Oil Company we request withdrawal of application
#2136 for the above referenced Shell service station."
AS A RESULT OF THIS VICTORY, THE PROTEST PLANNED FOR WEDNESDAY DEC.
18 IS CANCELLED! HOWEVER, WE MUST NOW CHALLENGE THE AIR DISTRICT TO
END THEIR ONGOING VIOLATIONS OF ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE IN OUR
COMMUNITIES.
