Michael Siminovitch, Staff Scientist - Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory: New Energy Efficient Lighting Innovation for the Hospitality
Industry

San Francisco's hotel industry have a potential of reaping energy savings
of 15 to 20 percent based on a new lighting control system that was
developed at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.  With an average of
eight hours activation time, occupied hotel bathroom lights have the
longest period of activation time as compared with less than five hours for
bedroom lights and two hours for desk lights.  Michael Siminovitch, staff
scientist at the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the Lawrence
Berkeley National Laboratory, will discuss how this new energy efficient
lighting control system works.  In March 2003, an agreement was signed
between Berkeley Lab, the Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD),
DoubleTree Hotels, the California Energy Commission and The Watt Stopper,
Inc. to do a pilot installation of the system at all 400 guest rooms of a
Sacramento DoubleTree hotel.
