Subject: Next "Close To Home" Talk
From: Lauren de Boer <klauren@earthlight.org>
Close to Home presents a talk and slide show
"Saving San Francisco Bay: What Happens When People Care"
with Jason Morris, Education Director of Save the Bay
Monday, July 7 8-9:00 pm Montclair Presbyterian Church
Learn how the plan to fill in San Francisco Bay was thwarted by three
Berkeley women in 1961. Their goal was also to reverse years of
private development and to open the shoreline to public access. At
that time only four miles were accessible. Today more than 200 miles
are open to the public. In 1972, Save the Bay led the drive to create
the SF Bay National Wildlife Refuge, now the largest in the country.
The Save the Bay movement has spawned a new generation of activists
who are building on this foundation of Bay Stewardship. Using maps,
stories and a PowerPoint presentation, Jason will highlight the
ecological and political history of the Bay; bring us up to date on
efforts to stop infill of the Bay for construction of more SFO
runways; restore Moffett Field wetlands; bring back native oyster
populations; and reclaim marshes and the Cargill salt ponds. He'll
describe the broad coalition of groups working together to restore
the Bay and its ecosystems and look ahead to the work required to
ensure a healthy future for the Bay.

and in the bat's mouth, insect. It's hard to think like a planet, but
we've got to try."
