THE CALIFORNIA DELTA: THE TRUE GOLDEN GATE

MIKE MORAN has been a Naturalist for the East Bay Regional Park District
since 1994. His duties include interpreting the Delta through research and
educational activities focused on the cultural and natural history of this
area. He has led natural history expeditions in Alaska, Washington, New
England, California and Canada.

Of the nine great landforms comprising California, none has been so rich, so
cherished, so changed, so embattled and so little known by the general
public as the Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta. It has existed for less than
15,000 years, but has been a source of unprecedented natural, cultural, and
economic bounty. This is the hub of the Gold Rush and the agricultural
juggernaut of the Central Valley, the center of the water wars that divide
Californians politically.

Many changes have reduced the once teeming Delta wilds to a mere memory, but
that memory lives on in certain places and is being recaptured, restored and
realized thanks to enlightened management of this fragile resource. Come
learn about the past and present of the Delta, its ecological importance to
the Bay Area and glimpse its hopeful future in Mike's slide presentation.
