A CREEK RUNS THROUGH US
How Watersheds Define a Sense of Place
Monday, February 9, 2004 8:00 P.M.
Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland
Through a photographic journey, Christopher Richard will take us on a
fascinating trip down a watershed system from the melting snows of Mt.
Shasta, along the Sacramento River, and out the Golden Gate. Then we'll
explore our own backyard -- the watersheds of the East Bay -- applying
insights gained on the journey down the Sacramento.
Chris Richard explains why it is central to a sense of one's place on the
planet to understand watersheds. We'll also learn why watersheds are the
best natural unit of landscape for human stewardship and political
organization Chris will highlight current watershed issues that East Bay
citizens should know about and can influence.
Christopher Richard has been Curator of Aquatic Biology for 22 years at
Oakland Museum of California, where he has organized numerous exhibitions
on aquatic ecology. He is the publisher of Guide to East Bay Creeks and an
ever growing series of creek and watershed maps of the Bay Area. He is an
avid fisherman, SCUBA diver and international cave explorer.

"From the waters of the Bay to Mt Diablo and the Delta, we'll explore local
geology, native plants and wildlife, watershed dynamics, creeks, hiking
trails and the history and culture of early native peoples.=A0 Monthly =
outings
are led by naturalists who know and love the places we visit.=A0 On the =
Monday
evening before each outing, a local expert will discuss how the outing
exemplifies important features of East Bay ecology.=A0 To understand our
bioregion, we will learn how the flora, fauna and waterways influence each
other and work together. We'll also learn about the changes to living
systems that have occurred over time and the forces shaping them now."
