THE EVER-CHANGING TREES OF THE EAST BAY HILLS
A History of Our Oaks, Redwoods and Eucalyptus
With Jerry Kent
Monday, November 7, 2005 7:30 P.M.
Montclair Presbyterian Church in Oakland

Jerry Kent began as a Park Groundsman at Redwood Regional Park in 1962,
and recently
retired as the Park District's Assistant General Manager of Operations
and Interpretation.
Throughout his 42-year career he has been involved in both policy
formation and
the day-to-day management of District lands, leading to a unique
understanding of
the history of East Bay trees.

Were the hills formerly covered in oak forests that were cut for
firewood by pioneer
residents? What were our native grasslands and woodlands like before
European settlers
and residential development? How large were the redwood groves before
they were
logged in 1860? Why were so many eucalyptus planted in California? Was
it for
beauty or profit?

Jerry will present a PowerPoint show with rarely seen historic
photographs of early
hill plant communities compared with current photographs of the mixed
native and
exotic vegetation of today. You will get the whole story about why the
Mahogany
Eucalyptus and Land Company created gigantic eucalyptus plantations on
private water
company lands in 1910. Also, you cypress, and eucalyptus trees in the
North Oakland
Hills. You will see the ever-changing hills in photographs dated from
the late
1800s, early 1900s, a series of unique 1935 aerial photos, and personal
photos taken
over the past forty years.
