The Tohono O'odham Indigenous People need your help. The Mexican government
wants to build a hazardous waste dump near Quitovac, Sonora, Mexico.
Quitovac is a very sacred ceremony spot for the O'odham, and the dump would
also threaten their nearby villages. Greenaction was asked by the O'odham
community and ceremony leaders to help them stop this dump, and we are
working with tribal members on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border and many
environmental justice and Indigenous allies to call on the Mexican
government to find a safer and more appropriate location for the project.
On Thursday, October 12th please join the O'odham Rights Coalition,
Greenaction, International Indian Treaty Council, Indigenous Environmental
Network and other allies in protests at the Mexican Consulates in San
Francisco, Tucson and Phoenix. If you cannot attend please email or call
the Mexican government officials listed below to express your support for
the O'odham people in this urgent effort!

SACRED SITE IN QUITOVAC!

Tucson: 12 noon, Mexican Consulate, 553 North Stone Avenue
Phoenix: 12 noon, Mexican Consulate,
The Mexican government and a company called CEGIR/Centro de Gestion Integral
de Residuos S.A. want to build a hazardous waste dump in O'odham territory,
close to the sacred site of Quitovac. This project has been conducted with
no involvement of the Indigenous O'odham communities in decision-making
processes.
The proposed dump would desecrate the sacred ceremonial grounds of Quitovac
and devastate the culture, traditions, sacred sites and spiritual well-being
of the O'odham Indigenous peoples in both Mexico and the U.S.. The dump
would also expose children and nearby communities to dangerous toxins
released in the land, air, and water, and could contaminate the underground
well water the communities depend on.
DON'T LET THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT TURN TRADITIONAL O'ODHAM SACRED SITES AND
SONORA COMMUNITIES INTO A DUMPING GROUND FOR HAZARDOUS WASTE!
