Parks as Urban Islands: Case studies in San Francisco Island
Biogeography
Where specks of Franciscan habitat escaped destruction, isolated
populations
of creatures persisted into the future as human civilization grew up
around
them. Over the years many of San Francisco's original animals have
disapeared
but some continue to beat the odds, continuing to live out ancient
ways of life
in a modern and ever more complicated world. We will unravel the
plight of San
Francisco's last California Quail, Western Screech Owls, Pacific
Chorus Frogs
and Brush Rabbits among others. Explore what is and is not being
done to stop
this recent string of local extinctions that will forever change San
Francisco's exceptionally rich natural history.

Kim Todd, author of Tinkering with Eden, will present her new book
Chrysalis: Maria Sibylla Merian and the Secrets of Metamorphosis.
Before Darwin, before Audubon, there was Maria Sibella Merian who, in
1699, set out from Germany to study insect metamorphosis in the New
World. Kim Todd explores the boldness and vision of this remarkable
seventeenth century woman.
