The Randall Museum San Francisco Natural History Series
presents
“Shellmounds - Ancient Monuments & Funerary Places of San Francisco
and the Bay Area”
with guest speaker Perry Matlock
For thousands of years the Native people of the San Francisco Bay
Area built temples of shell to honor their dead. These sacred
Indigenous burial grounds are known as shellmounds. Sadly, today,
most of the approximately 500 shellmounds have been obliterated or
rest in ruins. Join long-time shellmound activist Perry Matlock for
an evening presentation on the history and importance of these sacred
grounds and the efforts being made to preserve them.
