The Randall Museum San Francisco Natural History Series
presents
A Year of Butterflies in San Francisco
with guest speaker Liam O'Brien
After 200 days in the field, lepidopterist Liam O'Brien has sighted thirty-two species of butterflies right here in the City.
O'Brien, a San Francisco lepidopterist, had an ephipany when he read in a field guide by Tilden and Garth that " if one returned to a known locality of a specific butterfly species, the chances of still finding the butterfly are most likely very good...if the area has remained unaltered." That was written in 1986. Thrity years later and armed with the historic record, Liam logged over 200 days in the field, returning and combing ten species open space/park sites in our highly urbanized landscape. Telling numbers can be gleaned from the City and County of San Francisco. Of the 46 species recorded before the 20th century, come learn what still remains, what has been found, what is thriving/adapting to man rapid change, and what actually might need our help if we'd like it to remain. Expand your knowledge of host plants ( the plants the female will only lay her eggs on) and just enjoy an evening with cool pictures of everyone's favorite charsmatic microfauna.
Trained as a stage actor, Liam's niche interest became the zones where humans and lepidoptera converged. He joined th0 '|çÿÿÿÿlZb e Lepidopterist Society in the early 90's as a "rabid amateur naturalist" and has run the San Francisco North America Butterfly Count for the last two years. His journal and illustrative work have appeared in numerous national publications, including Bay Nature and in 2001, he won first place in the American Butterflies magazine's national art contest. He is currently working on a Presidio Butterfly booklet for the GGNRA.
