What is it about microsoft that annoys me so much? I mean, they're just like every other company, right? Wrong. First off, their software is so bloated and bug-ridden, its almost laughable that anyone buys anything they make at all. And, if you're willing to beleive it, they intentionally do this. The bloat is used to scratch hard-ware makers' backs, I mean, did you know that a 486 is still usable? Unless you've got the latest version of any microsoft product, in which case its an over-sized paperweight. Bugs? What could any software developer gain by putting bugs into their software? Gee, what do you tihnk win98 is? Its an upgrade that 'fixes' alot of the bugs that were in windows. This is called perpetual upgrading, this is how microsoft makes its money. That isn't the only way, microsoft has to have the most devious and underhanded marketing staff in the world. What if I told you that they use fear, uncertaintly, and doubt as a tool to get you to shy away from other available operating systems. Need proof? Read anything that microsoft has published about Linux. In fact, Bill Gates himself said something along the lines of "linux can only be used for simple applications." However this isn't true, linux has the same computing power as windows, and its more stable. Not only do they make money through less noble ways, but they don't care about their customers beyond the fact that they pay them for their crappy software. Got win98? Notice that little check-box when you were installing it, the one that asked if you wanted to submit information about your software to microsoft for some reason or another? Did you uncheck it so that it wouldn't send the info? Guess what. It sent it anyways. They also teamed up with Intel so that they could track everyone with serial numbers that came with the new pentium three chips. Security holes, I can't say that I hate them, except when they apply to me. This is another reason for all the bugs in the first place, when you hear about all the bugs that you find in windows, when you hear about one more, it doesn't really make a difference, so when a major bug is found in windows, it isn't taken seriously. Microsoft internet explorer. Let me give you the run-down. Netscape is released, people like it, people use it, people download it. Microsoft sees this, and attempts to get into the browser market. People try IE, people don't like IE, people get rid of IE and go back to Navigator. Microsoft gives away IE for free in an attempt to get more people to use it, in an attempt to undermind Netscape. Netscape declares that it will also distribute its browser for free, and almost goes under because of it. But people like Navigator, people stay with Navigator. Microsoft, in yet another attempt, distributes IE with windows. Netscape takes them to court, court orders microsoft not to distribute it with their OS because it is a monopolistic tactic. Microsoft responds by integrating IE with windows, Netscape takes microsoft to court yet again. Also, Spyglass, the company that provided the browser source-code that microsoft built IE on, accuses microsoft of not paying them royalties, as they promised in their contracting of the code. Have you ever used a microsoft product? Has the product ever failed to work because of a bug? Guess what now. Bill Gates blames you. In an interview with a German Magazine, FOCUS, Bill Gates stated that microsoft code does not have any significant bugs and he blamed the so called "bugs" on user error. Microsoft also uses its OS monopoly to its advantage at every chance they get. API's are basically what programs make calls to while running, microsoft makes the OS, they control the APIs. Not all microsoft APIs are documented, meaning they get an unfair leverage in software development because they can do things with their programs that others cannot. Need proof that secret APIs are used? Get WordPerfect, then compare it to microsoft word, you'd be amazed at how easily they get away with this. Microsoft is not the answer. Microsoft is the question. Alternative OS's: Proof: $Id: rant2.html,v 1.5 2000/12/20 05:56:34 djk Exp $ |
